The Bord Bia Egg Quality Assurance Scheme is a code of best practice covering both the production and packing of eggs. The key aspects of egg production covered in the code include flock sourcing, hygiene, disease control, flock welfare and environmental protection. There is particular emphasis on hygiene and disease control especially on the control of salmonella. The salmonella controls are essentially built around the sourcing of pre-lay birds from approved sources and with relevant documentary evidence; the heat treatment of feed; and routine salmonella testing on the farm. Under Irish legislation flocks infected with salmonella must be slaughtered out. Vaccines or antibiotics cannot be used. The standards for the egg packer include a requirement for a fully developed quality management system that includes a Quality Assurance Control Plan based on the principles of HACCP. Product identification and traceability is a key element of the packer requirements.

The IRL-OIB3-EU code is the official code assigned to the Organic Trust by the Department of Agriculture & Food to assure consumers of the organic integrity of the organic products on which it appears. This code also signifies to consumers the fact that the Organic Trust is an approved organic inspection and certification body. The Organic Trust is included on the EU Listing of Approved Organic Inspection Bodies and organic produce and products certified by the Organic Trust Ltd are therefore acceptable throughout the EU (and further afield by arrangement).

Organic or free range is there a difference?

Whilst free range production systems do offer the opportunity to birds to access open air runs, in essence this is the only significant difference between free range production and conventional production.

On the other hand certified organic poultry producers are subject to a strict production regime based on sound organic principles which cover the whole farm system - all with the aim of protecting our fragile environment; maintaining a respect and concern for the welfare of our animals through strictly controlled rearing conditions and the use of high quality certified organic feedstuffs; an avoidance of contamination from antibiotic residues and GMOs - all of which results in wholesome and nutritious end products produced under conditions which nurture a respect for the sustainability of the land we live on.
